Leading thousands of design lemmings off the cliff of multi-media design

Canadian graphic designer Julien Vallee is making his mark on the art and design world with the publication of his book Rock, Paper, Scissors out this month from Gestalten. Vallee, known for creating by hand and mixing with digital – a virtual cut and paster, has been heaped with awards and has been commissioned to work for MTV, Swatch and The New York Times Magazine.

Vallee’s new design book showcases some of his finest work. Gerstalten describes Vallee as “a virtuoso at melding the most diverse analog and digital design techniques. He combines graphic design, stop-motion film, and a talent for staging space to create fascinating worlds of images in his work.”

Vallee is also known for his wonderful work in animation.

-Original game dates back to the Ming Dynasty in China.

-Became popular in 18th century Japan.

-By the 20th century, it was played all over the world.

-Game is best two-out-of-three tries.

-Winning strategies include “psych-outs, shouting and trick gestures.”

-Recent weapon inclusions include “spock” (Vulcan salute) and “lizard” (make hand into a puppet-like mouth).
-Spock smashes scissors and vaporizes the rock but is poisoned by the lizard and “disproved” by paper.
-Lizard poisons Spock and eats paper but is crushed by the rock and decapitated by scissors.

According to Wikipedia, “The Lizard-Spock Expansion,” in 2008. As long as the number of moves is an odd number and that each move defeats exactly half of the other moves while being defeated by the other half, any combination of moves will function as a game.
From 2002-2009, five of the eight Rock-Paper-Scissor World Champions were Canadian.
