Print sizes at 300 ppi

A reference infographic of common paper sizes (A5, Letter, A4, Tabloid, A3) drawn to scale with pixel dimensions at 300 ppi, plus notes on bleed and the formula.

What it is for

A cheat sheet to keep beside your design tool when you set up a document for print. The question it answers: how many pixels does my canvas need for this paper size? The answer is always inches × 300 for standard print quality, and the sheet does the multiplication for five common sizes.

Drawn to scale

The nested rectangles on the left share a bottom-left corner and use the same scale. That makes the differences between A4 and US Letter visible in a way the numbers don't: A4 is narrower and taller. Anyone who has printed an A4 file on Letter paper has seen what that does to margins.

US Letter gets the accent fill because most of our readers in North America start there. The others are outlined.

Table on the right

Each row gives the paper size, its dimensions in inches and its pixel size at 300 ppi. A-series sizes are defined in millimeters, so their inch values are rounded to two decimals and the pixel values are rounded to whole pixels. Small rounding differences between calculators are normal.

Bleed, the line people forget

If anything on your design runs to the edge of the page, the printer needs extra image beyond the trim line. That extra is called bleed. A common amount is 0.125 inch (about 3 mm) on each side, which adds 75 pixels to each dimension at 300 ppi. Ask your printer for their number before you start, because changing the canvas size later means moving everything.

Why 300

300 pixels per inch is the long-standing target for sharp printing of images viewed at reading distance. Large posters viewed from across a room can use less. Small text and fine lines look better with more. It is a good default, not a law.
